Hi all, I’m very new to spreading/pinning insects. I’m wondering whether it is necessary to clean/disinfect your pins? If so, what is the best way to do it and how often should they be cleaned? Currently I am using Asta hardened and tempered black steel pins. Apologies for such a novice question, but I can’t seem to find an answer to this anywhere else. Any guidance is very appreciated! Thanks!

joasmith, Welcome to the ICF. I suspect that the simple answer is no, it isn't necessary to clean your pins before use. Certainly a pin shouldn't be cleaned while there is a specimen on it, but of course a used pin can be cleaned before re-using it. If it's stainless steel just plain water should be sufficient. Adam.

Thank you, Adam! Just wanted to get some gunk off after using the pins for several specimens. Good to know simply using water will be okay and not cause tarnish. Appreciate it!
