You know, going to auctions like these is pretty much like jumping head-long into a "shark tank" with your goldfish suit on !
Probably worse than going to an overpriced fair like Juvisy....
Of coarse, the material was REALLY "good looking" so the owner had splendid taste in his specimen choices throughout. Sorry, I could not have been there to kick around a couple bids on some of the common stuff.

I won 3 lots for a reasonable price. Many other lots were sold for a good price. Auctions are quite popular, so no bargain there but if you check the retail or ebay prices it is worth it.

I saw some of the prices live. There was a smaller collection by a Danish collector that went for 2300€ for 20 drawers. It was a nice collection as he had pinned some specimen sideways to show the underside. I was amazed by the prices for some of the Arctiinae (around 1000€).

It seems like data are virtually lacking on the bugs. It seems odd that people would find these valuable to me. john All are labeled I only looked at the Neotropical lots. When I scanned them, they were mostly labeled with scientific names but as to data - it looked to be lacking. I found some with handwritten localities like "Peru" with no dates that I could find. The Agrias seemed really data deficient That hardly counts as data - right? Perhaps the European bugs were better? John

Probably worse than going to an overpriced fair like Juvisy.... While I agree many of the prices for the rarities are high at Juvisy, its pretty choice material and often much better than the prices, and often better quality than ebay. Of course there are some bargains to had at these fairs, but most of these are sadly long gone before the fair opens to the public, being brought by other Dealers/collectors, the latter getting in before the masses with their tabled friends.

Hello nomad, yes, you are right in your comments about Juvisy. I know someone who was there about 10 years ago and he has always remarked at how "nice" the material available was. But, he also said that rarities and "hard to get's" were a real swift "kick in the pants" (as he put it) to own. So, I erred in my statement of "generalizing" that this grand fair was overpriced. I can only wish one day to see it for myself. My friend said Paris alone was well worth the trip. The fair was the ice-ing on the cake !

Wow, you made a “killing” on those nice Parnassius with lots 17 & 21...
Man, 5 boxes total of those beauties. Damn, that guy had some nice specimens !
I didn’t save a picture from lot #74 so not sure quite what you got there but, everything before it was Parides. Hope you got good ones of those.
Did you have to do much “arm wrestling” to wrestle those boxes away from other buyers. 💪😱😊

I agree, Juvisy is not overpriced at all. Especially on collector tables. I have found many rarities at very low price versus eBay or French auctions. (10€ vs 500€) And I have found some rarities you won't find offered anywhere. Of course, professional sellers put a high price on top rarities, but they pay themselves a high price for them, and they have a family to feed. And no insect sellers are very wealthy and they all work a lot.

In lot 74 there were Satyridae, mainly Pseudochazara and a single male specimen of a super rarity Hipparchia tewfiki from Yemen. Indeed species from Yemen are now nearly impossible to find due to the endless war there and the terrorist groups there. It has never been a safe country, but collecting there was possible until the 90ies

The prices were visible just after it ended. But a day later the web catalogue was not accessible anymore.
