Dear friends I have terrible news to share. Our good friend Danny Burk has passed away this week. For those of you who didn't know, Danny has been fighting against brain cancer for about one year now. It is a terrible loss for our community as Danny was one of the best collectors on Earth. RIP my friend. Attachments:

To say I'm shocked is putting it lightly, I knew about his illness but still. What a wonderful man and entomologist we have lost.

Here's a list of Papilionidae described by Danny Burk:
Papilio tydeus hanafusai Burk, 1991; Type Locality: Morotai Graphium sarpedon milon form monticoloides Burk, 1991 (infrasubspecific); 'Type Locality': South Celebes Graphium agamemnon cyanophytum Burk, 2014; Type Locality: Natuna Besar, Indonesia
with Mark Goode: Papilio lorquinianus manggasi Goode & Burk, 2012; Type Locality: Manggasi, 35 m, Mamberamo River, Van Rees Mountains, Papua Province, Indonesia Papilio helenus sinabangana Goode & Burk, 2013; Type Locality: Sinabang, Simeulue Island, Indonesia Pachliopta oreon decolorata Goode & Burk, 2015; Type Locality: Batuata Island, Indonesia
I assume he also described other taxa, maybe Delias since that was his favourite genus. Perhaps Olivier can list those.
Adam.

Indeed, very sorry to hear this. Danny lived in Northern Indiana, but seldom came to our sporadic gatherings of local collectors because of his dedication to ailing pets. So I did not know him well.
Did he make arrangements for his collection? I wonder if the Field Museum may be the recipient?

Tragic news indeed. He was a very active contributor to the forum some years ago.
In 2017, I very briefly visited him before heading to the LepSoc meeting. That was all way before his diagnosis. I drove about 6h from Urbana-Champaign to his place. He had one of the best private collections I had ever seen. I was only able to see select parts of the collection as it was way too vast. RIP Danny.

I am saddened by the loss of deliasfanatic. Though I did not know him personally he was indeed an active and "involved" member of the forum. He freely shared photographs of his splendid butterfly drawers and was VERY knowledgeable about Papilionidae and Delias to say the least...
He also seemed a very kind and thoughtful gentleman in that he fostered a "positive influence" on the forum through his many (likes) of others specimens, articles, and inquiring questions.
My sincere condolences to those near and dear to him.

Danny without a doubt had one of the best world collections and there are members here who are lucky enough to see it. He had much material not to be seen elsewhere in any private collection. He was also a highly regarded professional photographer with much of his work in many collections. I hope his great legacy his unique collection (and photographic art) will be well cared for. I am sure he would have wanted it to be. Perhaps and hopefully his magnificent collection will now adorn one of the many great American museums where it well be well cared for. I knew Danny was ill but it still comes as a shock to loose one of the great and most knowledgeable Lepidopterists.

I assume he also described other taxa, maybe Delias since that was his favourite genus. Perhaps Olivier can list those. Even if Danny helped with the descriptions of many Delias taxa, I think he is author of no Delias descriptions. I published 2 weeks ago the description of Delias dice burki in Sugapa : www.sugapa.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/7-Olivier-Pequin-Delias-SUGAPA-131-2020.pdfHis father told me it was one of Danny's last joy to hear that there is a Delias named after him.

He had an extensive website about his fine art photography and photographic services: dannyburk.com The website mentions he was seriously ill but that he hoped to return to work soon. Such a sad loss.

I know this is a late entry to remembering Danny, but I wanted to add my experience with him.
I made a few posts here, but was never very active. I ended up coming across an ebay listing for a pair of Parides hahneli. I got them and started chatting through the ebay messaging system with the seller. He was exceptionally friendly and willing to talk about the history of the specimens as well as a bit about himself. He let me know that if I was interested in reading some of the papers he published, we could exchange contact information through this forum and that he was deliasfanatic. He thought my name was pretty funny since he loved using Zeiss lenses. Danny also offered advice with photography when I brought up lenses I was unfamiliar with.
When we last chatted in early 2019, he said he was still working on some papers for publishing. I had gotten absorbed in college and had not been able to get back to him about his work, something I wish I had been able to do.
Even though I barely knew him and was a fairly new member to the forum, I could tell he contributed a lot to the community and was a great person to be around.
