Hello there! I need help from some awesome collectors on here! I created this account because I’m frantic trying to surprise my husband for his upcoming birthday with some beetles! Thing is he is actually an entomologist and it’s hard to surprise him without showing specimen for him to ID. He makes comments on that he has always wanted an Atlas and I wanted to get him one in secret. 😂 So I purchased some bugs from a licensed/certified supplier here in the United States. I myself am in the US. I ordered a mixed bug lot, and ordered a C. atlas. I am familiar with the C. atlas from Animal Crossing so when I received the one labeled “Atlas” something wasn’t right. I also received 2 C. causcasus which look identical to the one labled “atlas”. Someone recently here posted their Atlas beetles and they look nothing like the one I received. I did go ahead and let the sell know I believe I received the wrong bug friend and I am patiently waiting for a response. Not angry, just wondering if her supplier labeled her bugs wrong. Heres the bugs in question: (they smell like chemicals) Apparently they are from Indonesia. #2 Is the one labled “C.atlas” , middle one. I wanted to join this forum and get some professional help! 😂 Also I wanted to include that I have a new love for insects and I even purchased a ton for myself! I am usually a fossil person but I have gotten “bit” by the bug collecting bug. 😁 No matter what I love my new bug friends and I plan on spreading 2 of these and framing them! Thanks for reading!

According to the Catalog of Life, there are six valid species of Chalcosoma while C. atlas has five recognized subspecies. In many cases, insect dealers often do not use the most up-to-date names or even the correct ones. Males of the same species can also appear quite different from each other due to variable development of the horns. Genus Chalcosoma • 6 species: Chalcosoma argreggs Chalcosoma atlas Chalcosoma atlas butonensis Chalcosoma atlas keyboh Chalcosoma atlas mantetsu Chalcosoma atlas simeuluensis Chalcosoma atlas sintae Chalcosoma chiron Chalcosoma engganensis Chalcosoma janssensi Chalcosoma moellenkampi The Catalog of Life lists Chalcosoma causcasus as a synonym of Chalcosoma chiron. The link below should take you to all the species, subspecies, and synonyms of Chalcosoma. www.catalogueoflife.org/col/search/scientific/genus/Chalcosoma/fossil/1/match/1Some good photos of three of the species can be found here: www.virtual-beetle.com/index2/dynastes/chalcosoma.htmlI don't think this answers your question but hopefully it helps.
