I always thought N. antiopa was holarctic, like V. atalanta and a small number of other species (mostly satyrs and Colias, and P. machaon)... and that it had existed all over the northern hemisphere predating human history...

Does anyone know the history of approximately when or how N. antiopa arrived here in North America ? Was it accidentally introduced with European settlers in the late 1700s or early 1800s ? I have never read anything regarding it's introduction to North America. Could it have arrived in Canada first and then gradually migrated southward into the US? Genetics may be able to shed light on where it originated and to where and when it spread. Keep in mind though a mere 1000 years ago the stepping stones of Iceland, Greenland, Baffin and on the other side the Alutians were warm enough to enable expansion into North America (as opposed to accidental colonization) from both east and west. Or if it originated in NA, to spread to Europe. Chuck
