Does anyone know of a good illustrated reference work on the genus Catocala in the Palearctic, at least partly in English?
I am aware of a Japanese work on "Catocala of the World", but the text seems to be entirely Japanese and I'd prefer something with some text I could figure out...
Thanks, John Hyatt

I only know of one book that describes and depicts the old world Catocalas: Good old SEITZ, The Macrolepidotera of the Earth, Volume 3, Noctuiform Phalaenae. (english edition)

Thanks, Hewi -- It's easy to forget about good old Seitz! I must admit I've never actually looked into any of the moth volumes; I only have a few of the butterfly tomes. I'll start looking. I wonder of the disc copy that was for sale a few years ago is still around? I'll do some investigating.
Cheers, jh

Wow, thanks, Hewi! This site is mind-bogglingly useful. Somehow I've been completely unaware of its existence. Thanks for removing a bit of my huge store of ignorance!
Cheers, jh

The Biodiversity Heritage Library is a goldmine. Just about everything pre-1923 is available and quite a few post-1923 publications too. It makes checking old original descriptions a much easier job than it ever used to be.
