A friend of mine, a good connoisseur of the Parnassiinae, wrote me this: "A priori it seems to be a nigroocellata form of infernalis. This form can be quite frequent in certain populations. But to see if it made the DNA (hunza and infernalis are well differentiated in barcoding)".
It is not infernalis. Infernalis is quite frequent in Alai and Transalai, and the form nigroocellata is frequent too. Actually its frequency increased when you move southwards on its area; it is well known fact. Nigroocellata was also collected together with the new subspecies. By COI it belongs clearly to cardinal-clade, hunza-subclade. There is no doubt about it. DNA analysis I will publish separately, it needs some more sampling from East Pamir and Gissar. Seemed to me that some decisions of Lukhtanov are not really true, but it must be checked first. In any case, I do not believe hunza is subspecies of cardinal (as far as eva, ruth and some other very local and highly specialized species). I started to do the haplotype analysis, but my results due to the lack of material are very weak now. I will strength it a bit, then we will see.
