Tom, you mentioned in the first post that you thought a “road” may have been at one time cobbled. If you went back to 1960 you would probably find that road cobbled or sealed, and well maintained.
Despite the reported oppression of peoples by the Europeans, you have to admit, they really developed the colonies. I’ve seen numerous photos of stunning Stanleyville, now the hole called Kisingani. From Suva to Salisbury, once the Europeans were gone the structures and infrastructure went unmaintained and went to hell.
Shows too how fast the jungle recovers its territory. Two years after the Solomon Islands civil war started 80% of roads were impassable.

One of the Congolese pastors I was traveling with was wistfully thinking back to the days under Belgian rule when the road was excellent and people could travel easily all the way through CAR to Sudan and the markets there.
I asked, "But at what cost?"
He paused and then said, "You make a good point."

I'm fairly certain it's a calypso (esp. considering the apex of the FW verso). I'm not certain which subspecies it is though. Berger's use of nomenclature is out of date for the group.
