At the moment, being a college student, time is something I have a little bit more of than money (although honestly, I don't have a ton of either), so I think the DIY kits are the way to go! Thank you for your input!

"I hate making things" ? Me too ! Not just carpentry and similar endeavors, but I'm getting tired of cooking also.

When I first started collecting I built my own cabinets. My Dad has a woodshop and it was a lot cheaper to make them rather than buy them. It is very labor intensive however. Now, I only buy the "Do it yourself" Cornell kits from Bioquip and the open-faced Cornell cabinets. They are easy to assemble, and less expensive. The kits cost $160 for 6 drawers where as the assembled drawers are around $50 a piece. Minimal tools are required to assemble them. You will need 3/32 thick glass, cut to the proper dimensions costs around $40. So for $200 bucks you can build 6 drawers. Purchase the 6 drawer open-faced cabinet for $180 bucks and you are set. It costs me about $380 bucks for the cabinet and the drawers together...

Here is one of my home-made cabinets with home-made drawers. The nice thing about them is they all have doors. They are the size of Cornell drawers.

While I buy drawers from BioQuip, I get cabinets from a fellow in Quebec who has them considerably cheaper: www.atelierjeanpaquet.com/en/shop/open-faced-cornell-cabinets/These Cornell cabinets hold 12 drawers for only $180 *Canadian* each + shipping. The latter isn't cheap, but it still comes out less in the end. I use California Academy drawers, which are slightly thinner; each cabinet holds 14 drawers and they're similar if not the same in price. (They're not on his website, but he'll make them to order.) I also buy styrofoam spreading boards from Jean. The price is extremely low, and he custom makes them to any size that I want for the same basic price. I order them flat, not angled, with the opening at whatever width and depth I request.

Wow! What great prices!!! I may need to order from this site. It appears I can buy drawers cheaper from Quebec than I can buying the Bioquip kits and glass. Thanks a ton for your post!!!

Glad to help! Sorry to say that I can't recommend the drawers, unless they've changed since I bought some about 8 years ago. The quality was far below those from BioQuip.

Jean's drawers are lots better than the BioQuip kits, but not as nice as BioQuip's finshed drawers. But the price is right and I use Jean's drawers exclusively. Plus, he builds me California Academy drawers - which are pretty hard to get otherwise.

Interesting - perhaps he's improved them considerably since I tried them. I bought them 2 or 3 times, so it wasn't an isolated incident. Those that I've got have ill-fitting lids: not only loose, but often bowed at the sides, making them impossible to get a secure fit. The bottoms were also so loosely fitting that I had to affix strips of paper (gummed) packing tape to them, lest pests intrude around the edges.

Over the years, I've purchased 60-70 of these about 3 years ago with only one problem - a bottom that was actually too large and it bowed out so that it drags on the drawer below it. Otherrwise I'm very happy with them. Especially at his price My drawer lids seem custom cut from the same piece of wood as the bottom of the drawer - so they fit very tightly.

I ordered 24 drawers from him last year. I had an issue with corners on 3 lids that were not tight. Jean replaced the entire drawer on all 3 with no hassle. The cost is great. Shipping is expensive though.
