The "Giant Sulphur" clan is a small one throughout the Caribbean Region, Central and South America. They are characterized generally by their considerably larger size (in relation to other Pierids), bold and bright colors, as well as their strong flight. In fact, most are near impossible to collect on the wing; so specimens are generally taken only whilst busily pollinating a flower or "puddling" for salt nutrients. These butterflies, in my humble opinion have some of the most "dazzling" splashes of yellows, oranges, and reds among butterflies anywhere. Their colors are bold throughout and even the undersides of some are stunning. Again, for your viewing pleasure I present my viewers with 3 of my personal favorite specimens from my collection. I think these photos will surely lend credence to this awesome genus with a "splash" of color... The above species in order are: 1. Phoebis philea (Florida capture) males "variable" in the amounts of orange. Females simply awesome ! As far south as Brazil... 2. Phoebis avelleneda (Cuban endemic) with the colors of a "dazzling" sunset is there any comparison? 3. Phoebis philea huebneri (female) (Fruhstorfer,1907) (Cuban endemic)
