There is an excellent new book / I.D. guide out on Flower flies (Syrphidae). It is titled: Field Guide to the Flower Flies of Northeastern North America. It is a Princeton Field Guide. It is a richly illustrated book and the 1st comprehensive field guide to the flower flies of this region. There are more than 3000 color photographs and 400 maps. The guide covers all 416 species of flower flies that occur north of Tennessee and east of the Dakotas, including the high Arctic and Greenland. Each species account provides information on size, identification, abundance, and flight time, along with notes on behavior, classification, hybridization, habits, and more. Smartly priced at only $28 it is surely a treasure trove of information for any Diptera enthusiast with an interest in the family. I don't know how many copies were produced but, given the subject matter probably not a real lot. So, if you can see yourself making some fair use of such a guide than now is the time to get yourself a copy while you still can. Principal authors are Skevington and Locke. At least 4 other specialists are mentioned as contributing authors based on their expertise. I feel that this is a 1st rate book on the topic in every sense (as I leafed through a copy); and given its incredibly cheap price it is a bargain to own. Books such as this are rare these days and I could see in 20 years copies being worth a hundred bucks or more...
