This was another oddity which I saw in a collection of things from Australia. It was about 3 in.long with very stiff bristles and tuffs adorning it body. Looking every bit as unpalatable as possible...

I suspect the bristles and tufts are camouflage, to break up the shape of the beetle.

That is a female Eurhamphus fasciculation, male has much longer mouthpart. The biggest weevil in Australia, only found in northern NSW and South Eastern QLD. The host plants are hoop pine and bunya pine, not easy to come across.

Aha, I knew somebody would know this species... It was certainly a very unique species of weevil and the owner said he was lucky to have it since it was the only one he encountered after a year of living in Australia!
