Total newbie here to collecting. I'm sure some form of this question gets asked dozens of times, but what is the best way to preserve a spider for the long term? I see a lot of conflicting information on the topic.
What are the pros/cons of keeping them in a vial filled with ethanol versus encasing them in resin? Will one method preserve the colors of, for example, a black widow over the other? Thanks for any advice.

Spiders can be difficult to pin but easier to preserve in vials, it will fade in the vial over time but it may do the same if preserved in resin. If you use a vacuum pump (the one used to remove air bubbles from resin) you could use it to preserve the spider by opening a vacum to remove the air and flushing the resin into the inside of the spider. There is a similar process used to prepare humans and other animals for display called plastination but I feel that wouldn’t be necessary with a spider。 I wanted to try this plastination process but haven’t gotten around to it, you can read more about it here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlastinationThere may be images disturbing to some viewers! |
