Here is a most unusual species of Band-winged grasshopper which I acquired some years ago from a collection being parted out. Of particular note, are the re-curved spines adorning the hind tibiae of this species. It hails from Vietnam (though the data does not indicate North or South) and was collected in 1999. No other data is given. I like odd things among insects which I have not encountered before ; so its a keeper and I'd just like to know a little more about it.

As an Orthoptera Collector I can help you about this "Unusual Grasshopper": This is Aeolacris caternaultii, a locust endemic to French Guyana (not Vietnam) and belonging to the family Romaleidae. Your specimen is a female which unfortunately faded, it usually has vibrant colors (as shown in the attached picture), the males are rather pretty too with thir spots on forewings...

For our resident Orthopteran specialist francisento I post the below photo of what I think is a lovely male specimen of this species he mentioned. My friend collected it while in Ecuador but, no other ones. Looks the same. I also have no idea how my specimen came to have a label on it saying: Vietnam 1999
