He's been in business for quite awhile; surely he can't be unaware that a female is worth far more than a male.

You are right. Alain has been in the insect business for years, so it would be strange he did not see it was a female... if it was.
Must be a fat male which mud-puddled nearby a Mc Donald's !

I asked the eBayer to send me some pictures of dorsal face. He replied he can't take any....

It does seem strange... he's a very experienced seller so he must know what a female looks like and I'm sure he'd make a big deal of it if it was.
It's already gone to much more than two males are worth so obviously someone's taking a punt.

Agreed with you Bob. It seems the auctioner is not part of our forum

I asked him if he was offering two male's or a male and female. His reply was, "I offer the two specimens in the picture...I'm not sure on the sex so I put 2 specimens" As has been said before this supplier has been in the business for some considerable time, and we are talking about an iconic specimen, so I find this reply rather worrying for many reasons. I'm sure it this IS a female then Alain would know, so I very much doubt that it is, after all this is his living and I for sure would have found out well before putting it up for sale and risk losing £2000, something seems very wrong about it all.

It seems that general consensus is coming round to my original feeling that it is a male.

I've got a feeling no forum members will be bidding, still if it is 2 males then the price is already high, but someone could get a very cheap female, strange though he's saying he doesn't know if it is a female when on insectnet he confirms it is.

It still looks like it has a clasper half in the shade to me.
If it is a male it's a quite clever way to get more money for a specimen. He hasn't actually said anywhere in the eBay listing that it is a female, so when/if the buyer finds it is a male he has no recourse to file a complaint with eBay ... he bought the two butterflies he saw in the photo.
It is, however, (assuming it is 2 males) a rather unscrupulous way of getting people to bid way over the normal price for a specimen, even though it is not technically dishonest. People want to believe it must be a female, so they believe what they think they see.
Adam.

What I have noticed is that while it has been discussed on here and great doubt has arisen, the bidding has stopped.

If it was a female and I was selling it, I would at least relax it and show it was a female, or even set it so people could see it for sure you're gauranteed big money then and no disappointments and bad feedback, with doubt you'll lose out on hundreds if it is a female. Let's face it, if it was female it wouldn't be sold on eBay, it would be at one of the big European shows for something in the region of €2k.

I just discover the forum. i have the same feeling as Adam bouyt the abdomen. Strange also that a guy selling a such rarity don't make some verifications, photos (espacially dorsal), etc... For a such affair, the doubt is not admissible.
