Hi guys I live in Ireland and as a child I remember an insect in a tree that I can only describe as a catapillar with no appendages only on its rear end what looked like a hand in mittens that it used to move itself forward by arching it's back and propelling forward.. I being curious let said insect onto my hand and it stung me or bit me.. I would love to know what it is or was

I would love to know what it is or was It sounds like caterpillar of moth from family Geometridae but they don’t bite nor sting as all caterpillars. Paul
