John Curtis ( 1791 -1862) was a very fine 19th century insect artist. His famous work was produced in a number of volumes that were published between 1823-1840 and entitled British Entomology; being illustrations and descriptions of the genera of insects found in Great Britian and Ireland. One of Curtis's patrons was the famous entomologist James Charles Dale. Many of the insects so beautifully painted by Curtis were lent to him by Dale from his large collections of all the insect orders. Curtis's insect collections ended up on the other side of the world, being sold by his widow to the National Museum of Victoria in Australia.
