The Big-Headed Tiger Beetles of the genus Megacephala are certainly formidable predators in their world. So far, 122 species have been named. In a sense, they can be thought of as "super tiger beetles" or "amped-up" versions of typical tiger beetles. They are 2-3 times larger and more robust with even more heavily built mandibles and larger compound eyes. As if all this was not enough they still remain as agile and fleet-footed as their smaller brethren. These mini-beasts can not only make mincemeat out of a close cousin; they can tackle prey larger than themselves. I have seen it myself ! This particular species was collected in Peru and is called Megacephala klugii.
