Hello from Toronto, Canada! I've been collecting insects since around 2000 with a bit of a break for a few years. Recently got back into collecting and curating my collection. Nice to find this forum! This hobby seems to be in a pretty big decline since I first started at least here in Canada. Any other enthusiasts out there from Toronto?
- Daniel

Hey Paul nice to meet you. Do you know of any insect shows or fairs coming up? I was looking forward to Montreal but it seems to have been canceled this year.

Just wondering what your interests are in insects? Leps? Coleoptera? Any specific families? I see your avatar is of a Cerambycid. Good group. You will never run out of things to collect there. As a matter of fact, you could probably live 2 lifetimes spent collecting just them and scientists will of named another 10,000 new species.

No insect fairs in Canada except Montreal which is strangle too as they had to cancel last minute. I guess there is not enough interest now here. In US there are couple of insects fairs but they are all nothing compare to European events. If you want to attand good insect fair you must go to Europe or Japan. Paul

Welcome to the ICF
I know plenty of Canadian collectors, including young ones. About Montreal Insect Show, it has been cancelled for an issue of room, not an issue of attendance.
You should build a stronger community (meetings, collecting trips, association, fair in Toronto...) and all will be fine. The entomologists from Quebec are very active.

Ah, variety is the "spice of life" as has been said. Nothing wrong with that. Even though Lepidoptera have always been my first love in the hobby and continue to be my main focus;I still have a least 10 families of other interest (in 4 other orders) which I have dabbled in over the years.
Surprised that you don't have a giant Shield-backed katydid as your avatar with a name like Siliquofera.

Magnificent species indeed ! Always been a favorite of mine. I don't own one yet but, I'll get one. I do have a large Thailand species although it lacks the pronounced shield of this one. Katydids are one of those 10 families I mentioned which are of side interest to me.

My collection as it stands is not sorted properly but Im acquiring some new cases and going to work at sorting and organizing them into orders and families. Its nice to get back into the hobby after a bit of a hiatus.

Looks like your already off to a good start with some nice things there. Take your time, be a bit picky about anything you purchase (as insects are a renewable resource), and protect your hard won treasures from insect pests. Everyone like pictures of things on the forum so don't be shy about posting something you find nifty -- from time to time. Good luck !

Hi Daniel,
I'm on the other side of the lake.
Do get some real insect cases, it is imperative to preserve them. Paul can tell you where to order them. And keep in mind that insects need to be protected from even ambient natural light, otherwise they fade.

Chuck Hello Chuck, Oh yes I’ve actually been into collecting since 2001 or so and I have Cornell cases. I take great care in ensuring they are pest free and preserved well. Now that I’m acquiring even more cases I’m excited to expand and better organize them. Cheers!

Hello Daniel and Paul, I am also from Toronto and just recently found this site. Toronto being a large city, I am from the east side of the GTA, Pickering. Where are you guys from. I do most of my night collecting up north of Peterborough in Buckhorn. Have a cottage up there and run my MV lights throughout the summer. My passion has always been saturnids and sphinx moths and we get a good selection there. I generally rear a few species each year, this past year it was cecropia, columbia, promethea, imperalis pini, and polyphemus. Also take a lot of photos of leps and have collected butterflies as well. Most recently adding to my favourites (ornithoptera).
