Some people are still stupid enough to trade CITES 2 species without permits for few dollars... ridiculous and they feed our haters.
This said the 10-year jail sentence is a good illustration of the Chinese justice. If they were members of the Communist Party, they would have had no issue at all in their smuggling business. China is still the number one country of illegal traffic of elefants and rhino horns...
To all our readers : always ensure that sellers provide appropriate permits when you purchase CITES specimens. Don't take any risk, the price to pay could be ridiculously high. Western dealers are the ones who can provide appropriate CITES permits. Specimens then come from official farms.

Both dealers and buyers are more than willing to "take the risk". Some years ago I legally imported, at great expense, a dozen pairs of desirable (non CITES) butterflies. Imagine my surprise upon my return to USA than several dealers were also selling these- and I know for a fact that these did not have legal export clearance. I made it clear when advertising my specimens that they were the only legal ones being offered in USA- but nobody was willing to pay the difference in price.

Most collectors buy CITES specimens only with proper CITES permits, especially Americans and Europeans where CITES legislation is enforced.

Some people are still stupid enough to trade CITES 2 species without permits for few dollars... Papilio chikae, the species cited and pictured in the article is not on CITES 2, it's a CITES 1 listed species and cannot normally be legally traded at all. Adam.

Even more stupid then, thanks Adam for the precision. I have to add that putting P. chikae on CITES 1 list is ridiculous... it is a not so rare species, sold in quantity at 5 USD/piece in the Philippines, probably raised too... but that's another topic.

It's just not worth it, believe me, leave well alone and don't go near them without the proper documentation, as for chikae, stay well clear.

And I quote from the link: "The area around Baguio City has been ravaged by real estate development and mining activities for many years and obviously this is not going to change in the future, with great commercial interests." Where is CITES? USFWS? Makes no sense at all to hang collectors while real estate and logging is destroying wholesale.
I think the world is the most screwed up as it's ever been.
