OK, I'll write up the full technique sometime soon. Basically, I use a ring flash with camera mounted on a copy stand and 180mm macro lens. The "new technique" for improved sharpness is to use the camera's Live View mode with magnification, rather than using the viewfinder as I've always done. Live View is also able to display on a computer screen at large size, which I plan to try soon.

I myself use a sony a77II and a 90mm tamron vc macro. When i take a picture of my specimens I put my camera on a tripod. Focus it manual(look via the lcd panel) and zoom in to focus just like deliasfanatic. I use my normal flash and use the slope mode. I put my camera on the selftimer so it doesnt move and hold the flash in my hand. This is the result link
