I recently acquired two very nice paintings by Don Russwurm, who I used to know. The first shows two "vars." of the Silver-washed Fritillary and is dated 1980 on the back. Does anyone recognise the specimens and, if so, please could you let me know the data for them. Thanks. I will include the second painting in my next post. Attachments:

Here is the second painting - a mixed gynandromorph of the Pale Clouded Yellow. It is undated. Attachments:

Very nice George.
On your painting of Argynnis paphia, Silver washed Fritillary, the top figures 1 & 2 by Russwurm were used on plate 57 in Variation in British Butterflies by A.S. Harmer, 1990. They are of a female ab. ocellata Frings, New Forest 22.7.1941, Rev J.N. Marcon.
The bottom two specimens of Argynnis paphia figured in your painting, show ab. nigrizina Frohawk. For some reason Russwurm decided to paint another specimen of ab. nigrizina for the Harmer book which also appeared on plate 57. Showing as in your painting the upper & underside.
The book by Harmer used Russwurm's paintings that were commissioned for the work. If you like British aberrations it is certainly worth purchasing.
The superb painting of the gynandromorph of Colias hyale, the Pale Clouded Yellow does not appear to have been published.
Peter.

Splendid indeed ! Congrats George!
By pure curiosity, may I ask you the cost of those original Russwurm paintings ?

oops, for some reason in my reply, I referred to George's paintings as prints, I have changed that. The story of how you obtained the Russwurm paintings would be good to know.

I swapped them and 3 paintings by Frohawk for some 'vars' of British butterflies I had in my old British collection. These days I am more interested in the history of collecting than in specimens - although I do still collect certain foreign beetles. I have discovered some interesting stuff about two of the Frohawk paintings and will post this soon.

I have Harmer's book and looked through it, but didn't think that the specimen on plate 57 was the same - as there are several differences (e.g. in the black marking towards the apex of the forewings). HOWEVER, looking at it again it could indeed be an 'illustrational variation' of my the specimen in my painting.
