The distinctive leaf Beetle Sermylassa halensis Linn 1767 of the Chrysomelidae family has a widespread but a scattered distribution in England and Wales where the larva feed on Bedstraws, Galium species. The one shown here is a pregnant female, as the elytra usually covers the body. This example was found on the Wiltshire Downs, when making a search for the large and very rare, Wart-biter bush-cricket- Decticus verrucivorus in very steep sided coombe. A two day search for the cricket proved to be unsuccessful, you do not always find what you are looking for! Anybody interested in Leaf Beetles might wish to get hold a copy of Leaf beetles (Naturalists' Handbooks 34) by Hubble, D. here. www.pemberleybooks.com/product/leaf-beetles-naturalists-handbooks-34/32776/A reference guide to the British species, but certainly worthwhile for many of the species found on Mainland Europe.
