Hello fellow collectors, I am about to venture on a trip to Colombia where I hope to spend time collecting insects and I would like to know if anybody out there has experience doing this in Colombia. Or Peru perhaps?
I am not a scientist nor a commercial seller. I am a fine artist and want to collect specimens to include in several new pieces. I don't know if this requires a specific type of permit or if I can just be classified as amateur/casual collector. Any help would be much appreciated. I just joined this forum so I am very much looking forward to connecting with other people that have the same passion. Cheers and thank you!

Hi Esteban, welcome to our forum
Collecting insects in Peru or Colombia requires permit and on top of that you would need export permit to legally take your bugs out of the country. Permits are very difficult to obtain unless you will find a contact there who knows officials and can organize all papers before you go. Most likely would be easer to buy some insects off internet than travel there if you only need them for art work. If you are looking for adventure and thrill that is a different story.
good luck Paul

I would recommend that you take Paul's advice and order a few low cost things off the internet. You can still make the most of your vacation plans but, be very mindful of just where you are --- that is Columbia. It has been for a long time a very dangerous place for foreign nationals from the west. Especially so, if you travel outside of major cities. Kidnappings, extortion, and even killings are well documented. And even if the current government at present is in some sort of a half- assed peace agreement with all the assorted rebel groups; it may be tenuous at best. Wish you the best on your visit and leave the net at home.
