I've often wondered about the Paris insect fair, would there be any problems taking non cites specimens bought there through customs back into England?

Until March 2019 there are no customs restrictions between Paris and the UK.

I've been every year for many years, originally on Eurostar but driving for the last few years and taken many specimens both ways with no trouble at all.

But do they inspect all the boxes and handle the specimens?

I suppose it depends how you travel but I've never been stopped either at the station or the ferry terminal.

I have been to Juvisy by Euro star and my box is in my bag, when I go through customs, if your not carrying Cites specimens there is no problem and if you are, have the permits, which all the reputable dealers in Juvisy supply. On my last visit to the fair by plane, I took my specimens in my hand luggage (small rucksack), they must have thought my strange additional hessian bag, given to me at Juvisy to hold some, papers/ books looked odd, so they used a drug scanner on that and my camera but did not even look at my box of bugs.

I would recommend to put the specimen in the registered luggage than in the hand luggage when you travel by plane from Paris. Less stupid questions from unknowledgeable people and they are more and more paranoid in Paris airports (which is normal in those crazy times...). This said, no issue at all btw the UK and France to transport legal insects. It may change when Brexit will be enforced but not for the moment.

I would recommend to put the specimen in the registered luggage I usually do, but that visit was a day return from Orly airport and I did not want to carry a suitcase around. This time a hotel and Eurostar.

I've never flown to Juvisy as the train is much easier and quicker from the south-east of England. I went many times by Eurostar and never had my luggage checked. For the last few years I've had tables and had to take several drawers of bugs with me so I had to drive. In the past I've taken the ferry and have always driven straight through at both ends without being stopped. This year I'm using the Channel Tunnel and fully expect the same thing. Actually, I did have the car searched whilst queuing at Calais last year but they have no interest at all in a few bugs, they're only searching for illegal immigrants. The customs are not remotely interested in people transporting insects. they're only interested in illegal immigrants and drugs. I'm sure you could bring loads of CITES species without permits and they would neither know nor care. If you have nothing illegal you will not have a problem.
