Recently, while at my dealer's home examining a small butterfly collection I spied a small box sitting near his desk. When I inquired what he had received in it he said O'h some big Passalid beetles collected by a friend while on a trip to Guatemala 3 weeks ago. He went on to say his friend found an old rotting log lying alongside a forest path he was on while searching for butterflies. He began to investigate it and started breaking it apart with his net stick. Well, low and behold this log revealed a whole nesting family of adult Passalid beetles. He wound up capturing 20 in all. Once they were dispatched he packaged them up and sent them. This species must surely be the giant of the Passalid family here in the Western Hemisphere. I only picked out one specimen as it was free and they all looked alike and were pretty much the same size. It measures 81 mm long x 30 mm wide. It's like it were pumped up on steroids compared to species here in the U.S. It was also pretty cool that all the specimens present were still very fresh and totally flexible. Hope you like my handiwork.
