The best hawk moth in the Sphingidae drawer I am informed is Giganteopalpus mirabilis and here is a close up of the specimen. Also shown is a data label from the same species, collected at the same locality that I found on the web. The Bennetts were not the only ones to wield a net at Lebong Tandai.

I caught the first recorded specimen of Giganteopalpus mirabilis in Thailand back in the late 1980s in Trang, South Thailand.
It was a rather strange catch too. I put up a light & sheet outside the house Ian Kitching and I were staying at, and switched on the light before leaving for the forest nearby to set up our 'main' light trap. I then decided to go back to the house just before dark to check that nobody had switched off the light there, and when I arrived the mirabilis was already sitting on the sheet, even though it was not yet dark.
I think that these along with several other Sphingid species (eg. Eurypteryx) fly before it gets dark, rather than at night.
Adam.
