Photos cannot be uploaded directly to the forum. You need to add a link to a photo already online, such as on a photo hosting website. If the link is formatted correctly (with "img" in front of the link and "/img" at the end, replacing the "" with []) and the host allows public access (Fb does not, for instance) the photo will be visible in the post. Here's an example: Adam.

My book "Parnassiini Старого Света" will be out of print less than in a month, preorders are on, information was placed by me on Facebook. Good to hear you are publishing a new book, which is fine if you use Facebook, but not much help for people like me who do not. This forum and Insectnet are the closest I get to "social media". Adam.

Thanks for posting about this Parnassius paper by Huang Hao. I suspected the new taxa are probably synonyms when I saw the paper, but haven't had time to check carefully yet. He synonymises many more names than he introduces.
By the way, how are your Parnassius studies coming along? Any new papers published recently? Do keep everyone informed here.

I have been reliably informed that the Nepal butterfly expert, Colin Smith, passed away on November 4th in Kathmandu aged 87.
I remember he visited me here in Chiang Mai many years ago (1985?), and I have a signed copy of the 1989 edition of his book Butterflies of Nepal which he sent me. He also wrote many other books on Butterflies of Nepal, and was actively studying butterflies until very recently.

John, Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately the UK butterfly historian 'retired' from posting a few years ago due to personal health reasons. I am sure he would have been able and very interested to help in your quest. I found a lot of information about him on Wikipedia at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Heslop. He certainly sounds a very interesting person all round. Perhaps someone else on the forum can contribute some information. Adam.

And in correcting that typo, I see that the auto-correct feature wants to reapply the same typo! You should turn off that auto-correct junk. It doesn't include scientific words, which it assumes are typos. Adam.

Just published in Zootaxa monograph series: Hu, S-J., Cotton, A.M., Lamas, G., Duan, K. & Zhang, X. 2023. Checklist of Yunnan Papilionidae (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) with nomenclatural notes and descriptions of new subspecies. Abstract: A checklist of the Papilionidae of Yunnan is presented, with nomenclatural and taxonomic changes made. In the nomenclatural section, the junior homonym Papilio bootes nigricans Rothschild, 1895 is replaced by Papilio bootes nigricauda Lamas & Cotton nom. nov., Chilasa ( Cadugoides) epycides muhabbet Koçak, 2005 is synonymised with Papilio epycides camilla Rousseau-Decelle, 1947 syn. nov., Graphium cloanthus nyghmat Koçak & Kemal, 2000 is placed as a junior objective synonym syn. nov. of Graphium cloanthus clymenus (Leech, 1893), and Papilio astorion Westwood, 1842 is shown to have priority over Papilio varuna White, 1842, thus the valid species name is Atrophaneura astorion (Westwood, 1842) comb. nov. In the main checklist, five new subspecies are described: Parnassius cephalus haba Hu & Cotton ssp. nov., Lamproptera curius hsinningae Hu, Zhang & Cotton ssp. nov., Lamproptera curius yangtzeanus Hu & Cotton ssp. nov., Graphium macareus vadimi Cotton & Hu ssp. nov., and Papilio krishna benyongi Hu & Cotton ssp. nov. The First Reviser Principle under the ICZN Code is invoked to solve four taxonomic problems, and 18 names are synonymised with explanations, notably Papilio machaon venchuanus Moonen, 1984 syn. nov., which is synonymised with Papilio machaon schantungensis Eller, 1936. Byasa genestieri (Oberthür, 1918) stat. nov. is separated from Byasa latreillei (Donovan, 1826), and Papilio everesti Riley, 1927 stat. nov. and P. verityi Fruhstorfer, 1907 stat. nov. are separated from Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758 as species. Taxa that require further confirmation of their presence in Yunnan and those that do not occur in Yunnan are enumerated. The book can be downloaded (open access) here: www.mapress.com/zt/article/download/zootaxa.5362.1.1/52217/60910Adam.

I suspect that if you hold them with wings up like a butterfly to pair them they will fold their wings flat after you put them down.
With Papilios you hold the pair in position until the male copulates. At that time the male's antennae and legs will stop moving and if you hold them for a little while longer you can then gently release the male from your grip. If he continues to hang limply from the female abdomen you can then carefully place the female on a surface that she can hold on to, and they should continue pairing. Sometimes the male will come loose, and if so you have to try the whole process again.

I don't know about hand-pairing moths, but I suppose it must be possible. I guess that it will be easier to hold these Arctiinae in the right position than many types of moths. I certainly would recommend trying.
Alternatively, maybe contact whoever sent you the eggs, maybe they know the answer.

Note, this book does not cover machaon group taxa from the American continent, except for those which also occur in the Palearctic.
