It seems from the paper that specimens of this new species were collected a long time ago but was only separated from a closely allied species recently when new material were acquired by a specialist from a field collector. So the new species only remained undiscovered because no one previously in Czech/Slovakia studied the Morimus population in any detail before. This is surprising considering that the larger European Coleoptera are popular with specialists/collectors.

Then yes it is a remarkable discovery but why was it missed for so long? There were presumably a number of field Coleopterists in Czechoslovakia?

.... This is surprising considering that the larger European Coleoptera are popular with specialists/collectors. popular is often not synonym of well known or studied, -phily and -logy are not always linked
