Not sure about this Paul... You must be sure that this specimen has been correctly imported to Canada in the origin. Anyway jck, you should contact USFW to be sure. Better safe than sorry. But how you can be sure? Even if you ask seller , he will tell you some random certificate number, or show you the copy of the CITES permit . Actual specimen doesn't have a stemp on it , so it still could be illegal specimen . There is no way to find out how many specimens can be sold under one permit within the country .

I purchased most of these through eBay auction from Thailand and Russia. A few through Amazon and Etsy sites. I am not sure what the fines could be, but I am sure I do not have the money to pay them. I feel sick. One package was opened and a urvillianus was ruined, but I think it was my Postal carrier rather than customs as she was holding on to the package and it was marked delivered when it had not been.I have one more package on the way from Thailand as I didn't discover all this until it was already shipped. None of the other packages looked as if they had been tampered with. I just feel sick.

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and this topic is exactly what I was looking for. I just recently started collecting and my soft spot is Ornithoptera. Over the last 8 months of so, I have accumulated about 30. My dilemma is that I just found out that I could get in big trouble for this! I was unaware about all the paperwork, permits, etc. I reside in the US, and ordered all of these from Ebay without a second thought! Yes, very naive of me. So, at this point I have a wall of protected butterflies in my apartment and am freaking out on what to do. Do I turn them in and face huge fines?, do I keep my mouth shut and just enjoy them? I am not sure how these sellers on ebay are getting away with selling these, but now I am not exactly sure what to do. Any advise would be great. Thank you.
USFWS has bigger fish to fry. If you call them, they'll be forced to inspect and probably seize, all for nothing.
I'd suggest keeping your receipts. And from now on, buy from US suppliers.

And from now on, buy from US suppliers. Or worldwide sellers with export permits.

Customs wouldn't open a parcel with 2 set ornithoptera, and send it on, would they? Only that one of my packages had been opened. It had 2 pinned specimens, Uvillianus and Victoriae. The wing of the urvillianus was torn with the force of opening the sealed foam spread boards, The other not damaged. The package was delivered and I suspect my Postal carrier did it. I would assume that customs would have confiscated it? I really know nothing about all this

Customs not even that should confiscate your specimen , they would also contacted you for explanation and possible smuggling charges.

That makes me feel better. I never meant to put myself in any kind of trouble. I just cant't believe I was such an idiot. This last package should be here in a week or so. If untampered, I will maybe feel better. Maybe so or maybe never. I'm not one for doing illegal stuff.

-edited by moderator - no politics here, thanks -
As I previously stated, none , not one responder here knows what they are talking about. I provided the real answer and you deleted it. No politics, just the actual answer. Want to know what the laws actually state. I have this information. Anyone can get it. Everything stated here made up bullshit and hearsay.

I also have never had a problem in U.S. customs while bringing back insects or plants. never saw USFW at airport. but I never had thousands of specimens. the U.S. customs guys know what they are looking at. while in central or south America I make sure I have local help( i.e someone fluent in language ) with leaving with specimens . never show a permit unless asked for one, never force a local airport customs person to make a decision. most of these guys don't know.
