Indeed, Laurie is a true modern day entomology legend, up there with the greats, some of which sadly passed away these last 12 months, worthy of a nomad article, I would love to know more about Laurie's background, life etc, but most of all if he works for an institution such as a museum or are these trips personally funded, the work that must go into planning these trips (they ain't holidays i'm sure) what with logistics, equipment, food etc must be immense, and I can personally vouch for the guys generosity to other collectors. We all know you've had reservations about continuing these collecting trips but I for one hope you continue for many years as I love reading about your discoveries.

What about a living myth now : Delias nakanokeikoae jali Pass Valley West Papua 4 July 2016 Picture by Hiro Takenouchi Extremely rare in collection, some think it is an hybrid between Delias hiemalis and Delias klossi. I think it could be a rare form of autumnalis... I have never seen any with my eyes.

I've not seen an actual specimen either. I have doubts about it being a valid species...

Apologies for the tease and suspense. Instead of new it ended up being a rediscovery of the nominate messalina after 63 years! Here a snapshot of the gorgeous female. Fantastic find. Congratulations are in order.

Thank heavens Delias just like many other tropical butterflies mud puddle as we call it here, or we would never get these wonderful images. Delias photos that show these butterflies visiting flowers are very few and far between.

From my personal observations, mountainous papuan Delias do mud-puddle a lot (but not all of them : weiskei, ladas, pheres are common in the forest but I have never seem them mud-puddling).
Low altitude Papuan Delias and Asian Delias don't really mud-puddle.
The only mud-puddling Delias I have seen were in the Pass Valley. In all my trips in Thailand, Sulawesi, Bali, Java, Biak... I have never seen a mud-puddling Delias. They might do it a little bit but not all day long.

Olivier,
You need to be out very early to see Thai Delias mud-puddling. They do it before it gets hot, and then spend the rest of the day in the trees.
Adam.
