Another spectacular drawer showing the nominate victoriae. I am amazed by the variation within that population.
Having had hundreds go through my hands, I can say that the other populations, minus rubianus, are equally variable.

I like this butterfly as much as any other butterflies, I think you all will know about this Special Butterfly, Ornithoptera alexandrae, the Male Alexandra's birdwing, is the largest butterfly in the world, like its beauty color (Gold Spot). Can you tell us a little more about your image of O. alexandrae. When was your photograph taken and why were they being captive bred?

Show your favourite insects....birdwings is beginning to look like a private sales pitch - with Indoinsects showing his birdwings for sale ( has he Cites permits). I thought that it this thread was mainly for collectors sharing their collection.

It is not indowings (which is a famous seller) but " indoinsects". I have not received any proof of permits for the moment. I have deleted one of his post which was a sale offer. For @alexandkamul, I'd like to know more about your alexandrae farm. Is it an official PNG program of raising this species ? If so, it would be a good news for the survival of this species. PS : Danny and Peter < feel free to use your mod powers when you think one post doesn't respect ICF rules.

indoinsects > terimah kasi This is a proper Indonesian permit to breed and export insects. But this is not a CITES permit, so you can legally sell some butterflies on insect deal but no Ornithoptera (unless you can also show me some CITES permits) Cheers Olivier

I quire aware the Papuan locals breed O. alexandrae and release them. Here is hoping that this is what the picture is and we get more details.

In my considered opinion the butterfly being held is dead. I fear these two were never released - other than to someone who purchased them on the black market

"In my considered opinion the butterfly being held is dead."
Yes, I think mosca1 is right, the male on the left of the picture is indeed dead. If it was alive the legs would not be folded like that, and it wouldn't just lie still while being held by the abdomen.
Adam.

Our client from italy buy some ornithoptera. Don't worry we are legal company and have a permit. We don't sell them in black market or sell ornithoptera without CITES. Best regards, Indo Insects Dede Indrawan

Well I didn't see the picture/s. But I know that many butterflies that possess toxins making them distasteful to birds will faint death. Is this the case with birdwings? Not so much with my experiences handling O. priamus ssp...
