I always wonder how do you guys get friends in foreign countries. Do you arrive to an airport and shout : a need a friend Entomologist who has permits and take me there and then there are just few of them approach? Do you speak Chinese? How do you get contacts especially in countries like China. Do they advertise somehow collecting trips? Well firstly I lived in China and speak Chinese. Now I’m attending university in America. I didn’t really have contacts when I started collecting but once I started going around on the Chinese web my contacts list grew.

I know Ed doesn’t speak Chinese, but he still managed to get to know some of the best collectors in Shanghai, and exchanged specimens with them, Without talking as I was told. Hahaha. Very impressive! [/quote]
Simon, my Chinese was a little shabby when we went collecting but I’m happy to say I’ve come a long way since then-thanks to the help of many Chinese friends (which I communicate with on daily basis) my Chinese has not only improved but proliferated! This summer I’m working towards HSK 5. I have my eyes set on HSK 6... the final HSK level!
But that is correct- I managed to trade butterflies with many collectors in China including the one Simon mentioned(I too was impressed by the sheer quality of material he had to offer). Thankfully butterfly collector language is pretty universal. I even met the author to a butterfly book of the area I lived in...which me and Simon unknowingly walked by. We walked past a group holding nets joking that we had beat them to the butterflies.
