I would like the opinion of forum members on this specimen that hatched out of a pupa as I'm undecided as to what it is, the origin is Wheelers Bay Isle of Wight, many thanks, by the way that data label is no longer with the specimen it has been taken off. Attachments:

If it was bred, it should have arrived perfect? It does looks like perhaps it had difficulty in enclosing. I not 100 per cent sure but from the markings I would say its one sex. I have seen this species a few times in the wild going back to 1976. In the wild I usually distinguish the females by their larger size and broader abdomens.

The reason it's not perfect is because it must have hatched out in the morning and I didn't get in from work until late that evening so it would have been flapping around in the emerging cage all day. What threw me the most is the difference antenna size.

The different antennae size is often a pointer to a gynandromorph but one would have expected the markings to be different on each side of the wings and not symmetrical? There are some very knowledgeable British/ European Lep collectors here, as well as yourself, so hopefully they can offer their opinion. The best I can offer are these photographs taken before I had a really decent camera. The images were taken at Ventnor, in the same area as your specimen, except female 3, this was further west at Niton. From top to bottom. 1 & 2. Female left, male right. 3. Female. 4. Female. 5. Male.

Pupa looked normal just like all the others. Difficult to tell even after comparing it to the pictures Peter, I have seen many specimens of this as I lived on the Isle of Wight about 20 years ago not far from Ventnor.
