Are there any rules regarding how I should correctly position my specimens? I have been positioning my specimens in their natural flying positions, but now I want to reposition them after hearing of the importance of positioning them the unnatural way.

Look at specimen photos posted here, which will give you good guidelines. In general, the forewings should be at right angles to the body with the hindwings neither too high nor too low beneath them, and symmetry is ideal. There are exceptions to the "forewings at right angles", though, as some species look better if the FW are a little higher; Heliconius and Speyeria would fall into this category, just as a couple of examples.
