The problem is that butterfly, moth and day flying moth don't cover entity in systematic. Also what about Lepidoptera that flies at dawn, dusk, sunrise or sunset ? Sphingid covers all the categories as part of Noctuidaea. Hesperidae also covers some categories, etc. "Papillon" in french covers all the Lepidoptera, a systematic reality. to which you can add an adjective to precise which can in terms of flying time or habits. buttermoths sounds like a joke …. never seen any moths feeding on butter

About the source of the word butterfly. Some distant memory of mine links a connection between the British butterfly we call the Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) being the colour of butter. Hence butter flies! Also on checking Collins English Dictionary I can quote “the name is perhaps based on a belief that butterflies stole milk and butter” We live and learn!!
