Presumably these were not caught recently. However there is no fighting on Socotra. It's quite far off the coast and there is only fighting in certain areas of mainland Yemen, not that it's safe to go there.
Adam.

Collecting on Socotra is not so safe. also some administrative problems …. I am sure you are right, but my point was there's no fighting there. Adam.

Adam is correct about the three I have illustrated as being collected a while ago. The collection dates are in 1993 and January 1994. They were collected and sent to me by the late Dr Canu, who not only studied the butterflies of Socotra but also those of the islands of Bioko, Principe and Sao Tome. He is responsible for naming a few subspecies from these islands and also has several species and subspecies named after him.

Here's the rarest Charaxes of Socotra, C. balfouri. Unfortunately it's not in the best condition, but it's still a great rarity in collections, and a historic specimen. C balfouri M 3076 by D B, on Flickr
