Some Russian guy on EBay is selling a male O. priamus poseidon he calls (form divina) or "blue form". I've seen my share of poseidon subspecies over the years (or at least things with subspecies names); the term "form" was also used on a few. The thing is I've never seen a "blue form" of poseidon and I'm wondering if this is not another case of U.V. Light turning a green one blue. Is it possible it's greasy abdomen has altered it's color or that re-hydration altered it? I even have to wonder how many of those 16+ subspecies of poseidon are even legitimate anymore? I have not been able to afford the latest and greatest birdwing book which came out last year so you will have to excuse my ignorance on this facet of Lepidoptera. My birdwing literature is now effectively out of date. If this is a suspect specimen regardless of the cause I hope nobody falls for it. The seller wants $300 bucks for it !

They are all light treated and are nothing more than a trinket, of no value except to those with more money than sense.

I hand-captured a male OP on Magnetic Island, Australia some years ago. I carried it around for a while, but couldn't figure out what was different about it. Only after I released it did I realize it was blue.

Yes 99% of blue Ornitho for sale on www.ebay.com are UV-treated specimens. Some sellers are honest saying they are UV-treated, some don't say it. They reach higher price thanks to their beauty and the fact they are relatively new on the market (less than 5 years ?). Several bidders on www.ebay.com are not entomologists, but people who want to buy a nice bug to display on their wall. For entomologists, it is a pity because real blue forms from the wild will now always been seen as UV-treated specimens.

Thankyou for this post. I was tempted to bid on a couple of current listings for priamus priamus and priamus poseidon, both are a beautiful blue and listed as form Divina. I had a feeling they may not be natural, have to admit they are quite striking, but knowing they are likely UV light altered, I don't want fakes. Once when I was humidifying a poseidon, I noticed it had a mixture of blue and green, actually got a bit excited thinking I may have something special, but as it dried, turned back to all green. The blue tinge was just a temporary result of the moisture I guess.

I remember a dealer at a fair in England try to justify the absurd prices he was charging for these fakes, me laughing at him didn't help.

I'm very pleased to hear my post reached out to someone who could have made a costly error. More importantly, I'm happy that it informs people of the deceitful practices carried out by a few for the love of money. Such practices and many others are present in every hobby out there dealing with collectible items. Always try to stay informed and if nothing else reach out wherever possible for additional information or others opinions.

I hope it is an "auto-bid" from the seller. Many seller of fakes are putting their own bids on an item to make people think it is a real item that everybody wants. Do they also place a reserve price slightly higher than the starting price to ensure that their 'self-bid' isn't actually liable in the event no-one else bids? Adam.

Amazing what a fool will pay for a $15 butterfly that's had a session on the sunbed.
