That is no ordinary stick insect. It is a Neotropical Stick Grasshopper (Proscopiidae); sometimes called "jumping sticks". Most extraordinary species I've ever seen !

It does indeed belong to the order Orthoptera. The family is small in number as I don't think anyone is working on the group. It is Neotropical in origin. I don't know if there are representatives elsewhere in the world. Had a single drawer of them at the museum where I once worked for 8 years.
