This specimen was collected in February in Kaw Mt., French Guiana. I have tried to id it but due to many genus very similar in this subfamily I simply gave up and I am looking for help of Satyrinae specialist.

From the litterature I have it could be one of these 3 species : Magneuptychia newtoni Paryphthimoides undulata Spleudeuptychia itonis A+, Michel When I searched website “ Butterflies of America “ I came up to the same more or less point that it could be one of those, but which one. Thank you Michel anyway, let’s hope someone will confirm the species or maybe in this case ganitalia has to be checked. Paul

These are very difficult to identify. I have the same issue with these guys that I collected in Peru. I narrowed them down to what I thought it might be and assigned them names... Are they correct? I'm not sure, could they be correct? Yes... Too many that look the same in Satyrinae. I'm sure you could dissect the genitalia, and key them out if you had the proper literature.

The second satyrinae (yellowish) seems to be : Euptychia neildi Brévignon, 2005. I'm back in Paris after one month spent in French Guyane.

JMG I am confused by your last posts. The specimen on those two photos is one and the same. First pictures shows upper side and second under side. I noticed too they are very simmilar on both sides.

Sorry ! I'm too so confused. I was thinking that there were two species underside. And yet, I was amazed at the lack of legend for the second picture! Yes, strongly magnifying the first picture, I see now that it is a dorsal surface. Especially for these Satyrinae, the most common use is to present them by the ventral side, as in Kim Garwood's book, Butterflies of Amazonia. Since this is the same butterfly, I tend to think that it is Euptychia picea A. Butler, 1867.
