These tiny Vanessa atalanta larva in curled stinging nettle leaves, will need to feed up quickly and then pupate before the first frosts arrive, so that the adults can emerge which will then hibernate through the winter. It has been the best year that I can ever remember for this beautiful butterfly in Britain, there are simply loads around at moment, all enjoying the last of the summer wine. Larva photographed yesterday.

Collect some up and rear them through to Spring?! That should keep them safe.
