It just "crushes me" to see such such great specimens in such volumns available for cherrypicking and purchase ! I can't believe we don't even have small scale affairs here in the states. So unfair and stupid. I can only say these fairs in Europe are looked upon from afar by envious eyes.....

And you don't even see what was "prebought" by the Japanese. Before coming to Juvisy or Modena, they "pre-order" the best rarities which are not even exposed. For example, I saw a Japanese opening his own luggage-drawer with one splendid pair of Delias narses which must have costed above 1500€... and the box was also full of rare Papilionidae. Some sellers do more turnover with those "preorders" from loyal wealthy customers than from exposed specimens. Without these loyal wealthy customers, I guess there would be no more big European insect sellers, insect fairs and so on.

Any examples of the pre bought stuff? I'm watering at the mouth now!

Well you have to look into the box when the Japanese open it to add another specimen... so it is a very fast look.
In that box, I recognized a pair of Delias narses, some Parnassius wiskotii, one SA Papilio gynandro, one Ornitho (akakeae ?) and many other Papilionidae and Nymphalidae I had no time to ID.

The Japanese are fantastic entomologists.

I also see this "prebought / preshow" thing going on here in the U.S. where all sorts of shows of all types (except insects) take place. I've been to toy shows, antique furniture shows, antique shows, pipe shows etc. etc. ; and there are always people walking out and away from the show with bags loaded an hour BEFORE the official start time of the show!! Over here, it will only cost you $5 to $7 bucks to enter a show if you wait at the head of the gate for the show to open its doors. Most regular joe's and otherwise working stiffs (as well as tightwads) can be found here. However, if you are willing to cough up a spare $20 to $30 to enjoy the privilege of "floor rights" as they are called; than you get to enter an hour earlier than the rest of the pack (crowd). No need to feel claustrophobic or have a sense the place is all elbows and ***holes. Just pay the piper his due and you walk around for an hour with unfettered freedom. Yes sir, deep pockets and thick money rolls buy privilege. But, I say nice bargains and choice (albeit overlooked) items can still be found if you keep a sharp eye....

It's 2 different things trehopr1 - preorders that I'm talking about are ordered of non-exposed specimens that are pre-ordered by email/phone several months before the Fair. Japanese order the rarities during the year and pick them up during the fair. - the "preshow" you're talking about also exists but it concerns exposed specimens. True that if you can, it is better to arrive before the show starts. To do this, you need good contacts more than deep pockets (at least for Modena and Juvisy). I doubt organisators will accept money to let you in. I often arrive before that the show starts in Juvisy and Modena and never paid for this.
