Hello, I'm fascinated by beetles, after 3D scanning some. I'd like to know if anyone here shares my intrest? Here is a 3D render of Poteriophorus Monilifasciatus: Hope we can get to know each other! All the best, Mark

You are getting some very impressive results with your scanning, how many polys is this model? Do you also do cleanup work on your scans? This is about the best result I've seen so far. I went the standard modeling route to make animating easier, but it looks like scanning has gotten a lot better since I researched it last. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Thanks for the feedback! It's done with a Macrolens and high Aperture number (45). With some strong flashes I can get the wole insect sharp with just 1 picture. It requires around 100 pictures per insect to fully reconstruct it. Polycount of the model is +/- 50k, I do clean-up in zbrush. Sombra, can you sho me some work? Looking forward, Mark

How do you avoid diffraction if you are using f/45?

Diffraction? At the texturing stage, I select only the sharpest and best quality parts of the pictures. In the end, it all works out fine

Wow, 50k is a lot lower than I was expecting! Did you have to do retopology to get this low? Especially with the hair, you must be using transparencies? Also, are you using projection painting for the textures?
I have been on a bit of a hiatus from insect models lately, and have been focusing on designing robotic women, which is proving to be quite difficult. We are a lot more picky about human anatomy than insect it would seem. But here is one of the last models I did. Still not getting the amount of detail I would like to see, but after this last 3D "level up," realistic insects should be a breeze.
