Hi all, I had recently advertised a forum for keeping Insects. However the site I was using I got a lot of complaints from different people with different reasons. So I built this one. This site is for all insect keeping in general... I was wondering if you guys would give me your thoughts Thanks people.

Advice number one : "spelling correctly "entomology" in your website url..." Advice number two : "putting a lot of interesting content before advertising it". An empty forum won't give people the will to register. BTW there is an " insect rearing and breeding section" here on the ICF, if you want to participate to the ICF.

I'll also suggest that it would be helpful if you'd join some of our discussions here. That way, our other readers will be better acquainted with you and are more likely to see what you have to offer.

This forum already caters for all our needs, most of us if not all are collectors but it also has links to breeding, curation, books and equipment and has some of the most competent and best all round entomologists on earth, also auctions that are second to none, it is all most of us will ever need.
Having said that good luck with your site.

Just so you guys are aware the incorrect spelling in the url was not my doing. lol The site did that itself? How old are you? I'm only 28 myself, but there's a few common sense things I've learned as I've matured over the years. Among those things here's a short list that you might want to take into consideration: 1) It's really poor form to continually advertise your business within the premises of a competitors business. (ie. How long do you think McDonald's would tolerate a Burger King employee standing around their store inviting all of their guests to go try a Whopper instead?) The administration of this forum has very recently put out a call for more support due to rising costs of maintaining this forum, meanwhile you've made repeated bids to drive traffic to a forum of your own creation that aims to provide information that can already be found or posted here. I'm assuming you're young and just haven't fully thought this through. 2) Attempting to dodge blame for one's mistakes (especially small ones) communicates a lack of maturity. Most of us here will know that whenever someone registers a website or signs up to create a forum, one has to request a specific domain name (by typing it in). The site does not simply invent a URL by itself. 3) If you're going to be advertising something, and are trying to convince people to buy in, you need to have an effective pitch. For an effective pitch, small details really matter. Something like a misspelled url absolutely needs to be fixed before you start presenting your idea/forum to others... and this is true for a myriad of reasons. (If that Burger King employee is inviting people to come try a Woooper, who's going to take him seriously?) I realize others have been more diplomatic in how they've worded their reproaches, so I apologize for being a bit harsh... but I am assuming here that you're young and a bit clueless, so I hope you'll also realize that this advice is well meaning. Now, if you're a full grown adult, I'll trust you can figure out indirect communication.

Antgoblin, I agree with the previous posts and would like to point out that you have been given several rather polite "hints" regarding your own forum.
This forum has known not a single "harsh" post until now, thanks to the owner and the moderators building it up with piece of mind and great care.
I am sorry to say that your last reply to cabintom is the first negative post in this forum and just the kind of thing we don't need nor want.

The site only allows the URL to be so long, so it wouldn't let me type the extra o i needed in there. is quite a different (and more reasonable) explanation than : Just so you guys are aware the incorrect spelling in the url was not my doing. lol The site did that itself? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a true explanation. Anyone could go to www.forumotion.com and quickly see that the character limit is set at 20 (insectsandentomology is 20 characters long). That's speaking to point #2. Now in terms of #3, if it truly limited you to 19 characters, wouldn't "insects-entomology", "raisinginsects", "breedinginsects", or some other similar variation, have been a better choice than misspelling your URL? You know, a simple "hey guys check out this new forum" would have been fine, but creating multiple threads with the express purpose of driving traffic away from this forum to your own is seriously poor form... and since you've acknowledged that many forums have rules against this sort of thing, it's clear you knew it was perhaps not the most appropriate thing to do.

As a general message to the rest of our forum members. I considered long and hard the tone I've taken in these two responses, and I apologize that they don't conform to the usual politeness that we see around here. I'm just not sure that the polite reproach others employed was getting through. It's been almost 2 years that I've been participating in discussions here, and I want to help ensure that it continues to be successful. I'm unfortunately not in a position to support it financially, but I do what I can to drive content and help fellow forum members.
So, I guess you could say that I feel very invested here, and... well... the way this guy has been behaving ticked me off. Sorry.

OK time for me to enter in this topic
Personnally I fully agree with cabintom posts.
We had few days ago a discussion between moderators about T.C. posts that looked to me more like spamming than interesting information but we decided not to block a kid interested in entomology and to see more posts of him before eventually doing so.
collector-secret.proboards.com/user/638/recent In your 14 posts on the ICF, I now see 13 of them linked to your forum so I may be wrong but I think you are only here to transfer a bit of the traffic of the ICF to your forum. Which can be fine to me, if done cleverly by adding some value to the ICF.
If you're here only to promote another forum, I suggest you to rent a banner as Actias forum is doing
This said, I wish you good luck again as we need more websites and forums about entomology. And once again, few advices : - create good contents, services, and members will come alone - advertise your forum once it's interesting, not when it is empty - before advertising your forum on other forums, try to bring something to them (like interesting contents) - each forum as its codes and rules (even unwritten), you are on a gentleman forum, and your childish behaviour has bothered some of us. No big deal though
This is what I suggest to you: . put your forum link in your signature, and when you post on the ICF, talk about insects, not about your forum. Some of our readers and members will click on your links and discover your forum.

Kid? Where did that come from? None the less, thanks wollastoni, I truly thought about your reply here. First I do want to say I do not find cabintom's reply any less offensive, but i apologize to cabontom none the less as some of the things he said was true. However I was not mistaken on the link deal. Coming out and calling someone a liar on something they now nothing about shows lack of intelligence. However I have been posting my forum here quite a bit so I apologize for that as well. The reason, I posted so many links here is because whenever I made a post on my forum I was trying to be active on this forum as well, and just talked about it some here and just posted the link to the topic that I had already typed up. I should have just copied and pasted it to here rather than using a link. I will not mention my site here ever again.
Since, this thread went, a little off topic, I just deleted every post, to cause less issues.
I apologize for the troubles.
