Thank you for your ID. Are you quite sure Hoplia coerulea, I thought that species has a male that is a brilliant metallic blue en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoplia_coerulea

Here are some photos of argentea. It doesn't match with your males (males of argentea are really yellowish). Have you other photos of males ?

That is about all the images I have of the males. I am certainly not doubting your ID, I am not an expert. I did look at Hoplia coerulea but thought my males were a rather turquoise colour blue rather than the bright morpho blue I had seen in the web images of that species . Perhaps they had been out for a while. I had seen this image naturewatch.org.nz/taxa/337554-Hoplia-argentea and upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Hopliaargentea.JPG There seems to be many forms of that Scarab. If you are certain they are Hoplia coerulea, then not wishing to confuse I will change the details here. What is the status of coerulea, is it a common Scarab .

Is there a river near the places where you've made these observations ?

I would certainly not say a river, there was a small stream a few hundred meters off. This was a high Alpine Meadow at 1700 meters.

I have changed this to the correct species name Hoplia coerulea, as suggested by entomofou and many thanks to him for his help here.

Wow! My ever beloved Hoplia coerulea! I live just in the full small area of distribution of this unmistakable species, the most magnific of all european scarabs and one of the insects with a most impossible colour. But I never saw one alive, despite traveling a lot around my zone (and to zones where some pals saw it). It's a rare species. I only saw it in collection, sadly (I had one when child, as a special gift from a pal that knew how I loved this species).
