Yes I believe you are probably right, but as far as I know there are some butterflies which are still in flight in early October especially in the southern Islands, I was just hoping some one on this forum has some Japanese butterfly knowledge and could confirm my hopes of possibly encountering some butterfly species during October.

The very South Islands should be good for butterflies in October as the monsoon season is at finish. The climat there is mostly tropical not the same as northern parts of Japan. Though I have never been there, maybe one day .

Dear 18duroe, Welcome to Japan. As my colleagues have already pointed, October is a bit late for butterflies especially in northern Japan. However it is OK to collect some interesting species in southern Japan. If you would like to know the details, please send PM to me and give your e-mail address. I might give you useful advice. Cheers, mokky

Id thought Id write an update on my trip to Japan. I spent a week in total during early October and visited Osaka, Kyoto, and Kinosaki. I managed to catch few butterflies in planted areas within the city in Osaka and Kyoto but due to the high traffic in those areas I was restricted. In Kinosaki I managed to find a decent amount of butterflies but during my time there I encountered some strong winds that may have facilitated my collecting despite making walking over the hills dangerous! Bellow are pictures of the areas I collected in Kinosaki and some of my catches! The first location I collected when I arrived in Kinosaki was a local cemetery.

I saw many Papilio machon and Papilio Helenus but since I did not bring my large net and broke my other one catching a Satyridae, this left me stuck trying to use a broken net to catch Papillion on a hill with high winds(not a good combination) but I still managed to land a few specimens of papilio without getting too injured! Bellow are some pictures!

I saw many Hummingbird moths within the city and around the perimeter, they were very difficult to not damage while in the net. Also any recommendations on dispatching fast moving big bodied Lepidoptera? I found that squeezing their thorax damaged them quite a bit!

While walking in the garden of a temple in Osaka, this Lycaenidae captured my attention since it was larger than the others.

Also any recommendations on dispatching fast moving big bodied Lepidoptera? I found that squeezing their thorax damaged them quite a bit! Trap them between two folds in the net and inject them with some sort of killing solution (nail polish remover for example).
