I just came across this www.gardeners.com/buy/storm-proof-fruit-and-crop-cage-large/8592463.html and it looks like it might be good for housing butterflies or moths. I'm not sure exactly how large the mesh is, either, but it looks like it might be big enough for moths to mate through. Comes in a few sizes, too. The only issue I can see (though I could be wrong) is that it might be hard to get inside without letting the butterflies out. Perhaps use a larger one as the main butterfly cage, sew the 4x4 size over one of the doors as an airlock, and keep things that won't fly away in the 4x4? It would probably also be a good idea to seal it more tightly around the bottom. Maybe dig a frame-shape trench a few inches deep, set it up with the edges in the trench, and bury the edges of the mesh so nothing would crawl/wriggle out? I suppose caterpillars might escape, but if their food plants were inside, they'd have some incentive to stay.

I would go for the "pest control pop up cages" further down the link, much cheaper and designed to keep OUT pests, so also keep IN caterpillars etc.
For $350 you could buy parasite proof netting and enough treated timber to build one 3x the size of this exactly how you want it, including doubled door entry to prevent escape.
